Johannes Võerahansu (1900-1980) has been called one of the most prominent landscape painters in Estonia. In the first half of the 1940s, he often went on creative trips to the streamlined Haanja uplands, depicting both the Vaskna and Uue-Saaluse lakes there and the lush valleys surrounding them (see also: “Haanja motif” from 1943, EKM).
“Between the valleys of Haanja” is a piece about which art historian Hilja Läti made a striking observation, writing in the catalogue of the exhibition of Võerahansu’s works: “The more you delve into the artist’s simple motifs, the more you discover their painterly finesse. Even a smaller view, sometimes only drawn in a sketchy manner, has a monumental effect. The vastness and distances of the landscape are always emotionally connected to the sky, whether it is brightly transparent or covered in grey clouds.” (Estonian Art Museum, 1976)
