August Pulst (1889-1977), a painter and museologist who studied with Konstantin Süvalo at the Riga Art School before World War I, remained faithful to the Impressionist approach in his artistic creation. Art historian Mai Levin has written that Pulst was influenced by “the spring enthusiasm, the brightened color scheme and the sense of composition that were more characteristic of Art Nouveau art, which he experienced in the Riga art milieu” (“August Pulst as an Artist”, 2025, p. 31).
Brightness and freshness also characterize this painting, which focuses on capturing the mood of the moment, in which the air shimmers. The leaves fluttering in the wind of the foreground and the conditionally painted forest canopy in the background form a single picturesque whole, into which the house also harmoniously blends. Just imagine how nice it would be to sit on the balcony there and enjoy your morning coffee, with a million-dollar view of the blooming garden!
