Ilmar Kimm (1920-2011) who worked as a painting teacher at the Tartu State Institute of Art, mastered almost all painting genres and was therefore a sought-after lecturer. However, landscape played an important role in his portfolio throughout the decades, especially that of South Estonia.
This view of the Kanepi settlement in Põlva County, specifically Savimägi, traces with topographic precision every house along the ascending road. Coming from Otepää, the only exception is the church tower, which should actually be located slightly to the left, in the shade of a birch, but for artistic purposes, Kimm has painted this sharp peak instead. Kimm’s landscape paintings are captivating above all by the deepening of the motif and the discreet highlighting of its charm.
