Olga Terri (1916-2011) became one of the most important Estonian painters synthesizing impressionism and expressionism. Her ability to reveal her soul was characterized by characters who clearly represented their time and space and were like a kind of historical chronicle. As a true Estonian, she could only secretly express her feelings and anger against the regime in her paintings during the Soviet period, and her work only came to the public eye under relaxed restrictions in the 1960s.

Terri’s earlier creative period, including the lyrical painting “An evening in the park” depicting two young women, is full of charming light and shadow imagery and free brushwork, reminiscent of Terri’s famous teacher Eerik Haamer. It focuses on conveying the psychological side of the characters, emphasizing human closeness, which had a fresh and natural effect next to the official art of the time. It is noteworthy that the background of the figures behind the tree is painted almost abstractly – once again a new approach to picturesque possibilities.
