Still-life pieces with flowers as the central subject were one of Richard Uutmaa’s (1905-1977) favorite genres, along with seascapes. The artist always painted his still-lifes in nature, immediately replacing the flowers as they faded. The still-life here in its bright colors is a kind of dedication to the summer heat: on the table there is a bowl of apples and another with strawberries but above all are lush marigolds – the long-blooming flowers of the Estonian summer.
The painting exudes freshness, freedom and summer fluidity – nothing is missing or in excess. The piece, painted artistically and with a lively line, recalls the style of expression of the 1930s and is a tribute to life in Estonia during that period.
