Arville Puström-Uus (1921-2014), originally from Merivälja in Tallinn, began studying art under Elmar Kits and Juhan Nõmmik at Pallas but her studies were interrupted by the war. She received her diploma as a painter as a refugee at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts (1946-1949) instead. After school, the artist moved to the USA, where she mainly painted landscapes and flowers.
This view of summer in Estonia is imbued with nostalgia and longing for the homeland. Thick layers of paint in charmingly warm tones are applied to the canvas with a wide brush and spatula while the invitingly open white window frames and the regular planking on the house are done with a finer finish. Lining the path leading to the farm with lush flower beds, Puström-Uus creates an idyllic view of a typical Estonian country home.
