Capturing a specific building is quite rare in the expressive portfolio of Valdur Ohakas (1925-1998). Apparently, the 17th-century barn building in Tallinn’s Old Town interested Ohakas both with its monumentality and dynamism of the angle on a narrow, curved street, and with its rough wall texture, allowing the artist to demonstrate his painterly abilities par excellence.

Staying true to the nuanced development of brownish-gray colors, Ohakas also presents us with a winter city – the snowy street and roofs make the motif more colorful and brighter, while the evening twilight adds a lively accent to the piece.
