Olav Maran (b. 1933) is one of the best-known representatives of classical flower paintings whose work is permeated by a search for harmony and metaphysical peace. This is also the case with the 1978 “Summer flowers on a brown background” with a masterly dark background that makes us pause for a moment.

While his later flower paintings were very detailed, his work from the 1960s and 1970s shows a soft, muted style of imagery instead. He mostly used tempera for this style (“Gladiolus and Other Flowers”, 1969, EKM) but sometimes also oil (“Marigolds and Asters”, 1976, EKM). The main charm of such pieces lies in the mystery that comes from not painting the details because only this forces us to sharpen our senses of sight, to put our noses up to the painting and to discover Maran’s magic.
