When enjoying the paintings of Edgar Valter (1929-2006), we rarely find the world as it appears to us on a daily basis. He still manages to surprise the viewer with an exciting perspective, distorted spatial perceptions or unexpected color combinations, and “Flying chairs” is no exception.

As if placing the music teachers’ favorite game of chairs in a dreamlike form, the painting poses visual questions about the direction of movement as well as the model and her shadow. Where does the light shine? Where will the chairs fly next? Or are the two extreme figures sitting on a tree branch instead?

Valter enjoys free improvisation here but as a skilled composer, he is also able to keep the overall impact of the work in mind.
