Olav Maran (b. 1933) is the Estonian Giorgio Morandi, but in his own way. Our great master of the metaphysical still life genre and grand old man, Maran’s work is a perfect example of harmonious composition and the soul-opening power of simple things.

It seems as if the objects in this painting have come to life and that they all have their own unique character. The accent is the smallest object in the composition, but immediately noticeable in its darkness – the blueberry. The harmony of blue and white tones is complemented by the soft contrast of brown, emphasizing the dignified age and eternity of the object.
