Harri Pudersell (1922-2008), a lifelong Tartu native, learned to observe nature sensitively as well as to recognize the discreet subtlety of its coloration, from Johannes Võerahansu. It was the latter that accompanied his post-impressionist creation throughout his life. Pudersell’s creative path was closely connected to the Pallas Art School where he studied from 1943-1944 and graduated, now under the name of the Tartu State Institute of Art, in 1950. He remained associated with the same school for half a century, also serving as its director in the 1970s.

The restrained color schemes were generally characteristic of 1950s painting and this suited Pudersell’s style well. The drawing process played a rather large role in his paintings, on the basis of which the artist established the composition and color schemes. In “Old Windmills” it is also clear that nothing has been left to chance – the charcoal-gray wood of the windmills helps to shine both on the buildings themselves and on the brightly shining summer sky and even the clouds are made to flirt on the canvas with the flowing lines of the junipers.
