One of Pallas’ most famous alumni, Endel Kõks, continued his artistic career in Sweden where, unlike those who remained in Estonia, he had the opportunity to visit different parts of the world for inspiration. By conveying his travel impressions, he was able to find surprising perspectives and angles time and again.
In this piece, too, he seems to be engaged in anthropological visual research. To capture the historic center of Amsterdam, Kõks has chosen an atypical motif of a trio of street musicians. It is not the palaces or bridges along the canals of the 17th century that have merited his attention but enthusiastic young male musicians who could belong in any big city.
However, Kõks localizes them with the world-famous Heineken brewery building, painting it as a clearly defining background. Of course, the portrait of Vincent van Gogh also refers to Amsterdam but such a poster could actually advertise an exhibition of the world-famous Dutch painter in some other place, not necessarily in Amsterdam. In this way, Kõks attracts every beer and art lover!
