Legends and native mythology were the most beloved playground of philosopher-artist Jüri Arrak (1936-2022). By choosing the symbolic purity and directness of the medieval setting as a vehicle for his message, Arrak touched on timeless questions that were as relevant then as they are today.

However, it is not often that one encounters the theme of love in the artist’s work, which Arrak effectively introduces in “Vision”, which is part of his most appreciated creative period. In the foreground, he paints his symbolic character Maivi whose greatest supporter is the woman who lives in his soul and heart. It is her support and love that give the man wings, so the artist asks the viewer – how many characters are there really in front of us? One, two, three…? Or is it all just a vision?
