“In front of the mirror” is a truly excellent example of Valdur Ohakas’ (1925-1998) versatile mastery of styles where the Fauvist female body in flesh tones is combined with stylizing expressionist modeling with light and shadow and abstract spatial treatment. The revealing of the model’s character is remarkable, both in her face and posture.
They reflect confidence and a certain provocativeness, which is an approach that was rarely seen in female nudes of that time. By adding some freehand blue-and-white spots to “In front of the mirror”, Ohakas brings a fresh and vibrant accent to the already excellent composition.
