Valdur Ohakas’ (1925-1998) miniatures from the 1980s and 1990s, including this one, form an important stage in the artist’s work. They were created spontaneously, from moments when Ohakas was struck by unexpected inspiration. Therefore, they have a fresh and relaxed effect and carry positive emotions.
In “Gala night”, the artist has placed a woman in a dark evening gown in a theater box. Ohakas is not interested in what is happening on stage but is fascinated by the light reflected from it on the young lady’s face and neck, her deep gaze and the festive atmosphere of the theater hall.
