Kaljo Polli (1928-2004), who developed as a painter under the tutelage of Johannes Võerahansu, had a subtle sense of colorism that can be felt throughout his work. “Autumn in Käsmu” is a classic post-Pallasian painting that vividly conveys the rich tones of the colorful autumn.
In this piece, completed in one of the most romantic villages on the Northern coast, Polli is captivated by the inviting road hidden between mighty trees, which with its rain-soaked surface reflects the shadows from both the sky and the treetops. The canvas has a tastefully balanced ratio of green, brown and red, which conveys a time when autumn is at its most authentic.
