The 1970s were years of travel for Endel Kõks when he visited numerous countries both in Europe and on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. In 1976, he traveled to Spain and stopped in Madrid. On the recommendation of locals, he also visited the most famous shopping street in the El Rastro area, Ribera de Curtidores, which is a long avenue with hundreds of stalls.

The building, with its ceremonial grand staircase in the middle, which Kõks depicts in his painting, impressed him with its modern lines and gave the artist the opportunity to convey light and shadow on its intersecting staircases. Kõks also introduces us to the clothing fashion of the time, which is characteristic of the Southern countries, significantly more colorful than the Northern ones. A magnificent composition from Kõks’ travel series, which will be auctioned from the Endel Kõks estate.
