In the work of sculptor and graphic artist Renaldo Veeber (1937-2010), we often encounter the wolf, which plays an important role in folk tales. Veeber, who has always been interested in both nature and mythology, interprets the meaning of the wolf for Estonians with suggestive imagery in this work.
“A distant time” seems, on the one hand, to have been inspired by the long winters and famines of the early 17th century in Estonia when hungry wolf packs roamed the villages. On the other hand, Veeber depicts the wolf with obvious sympathy and approaches the subject with surreal freedom.
He scatters realistic images throughout the design – landscapes, farms, a wolf but we still clearly understand that this is Estonia the artist is dealing with. And it was precisely for the preservation of the culture of this small nation that Veeber fought for throughout his life.
