Günther Friedrich Reindorff (1889-1974) was a renowned landscape painter and commercial graphic artist, the designer of the first Estonian Kroon currency that went into circulation in 1928. In addition, he worked as a professor of graphic arts and as the head of graphic arts at the State School of Art and Industry. He also founded their departments of lithography, printing and zincography.

The forest was one of the artist’s main sources of inspiration and favorite places to draw. In the 1960s, he often went out into nature with a pen or ink in his pocket. Most of the pieces remained in black and white but on occasions when the artist was particularly fascinated by color, he later reached for colored pencils and watercolors in the studio.

In addition to the excellent lighting, which requires an experienced eye and hand due to the darkness of the forest floor, the rhythm created by the tree trunks in “Keila forest” is captivating. It is this that allows the eye to run over the surface with pleasure, both horizontally and vertically and to discover new details all the time.
