One of the most prominent painters of her generation, Liisi Örd (b. 1984) brings back the realistic nature motif executed in a pasty manner to Estonian painting but there is something more behind it. Örd, who graduated as a painter from the University of Tartu, searches for the invisible to the eye, the primordial essence of nature and transfers it to the canvas, sometimes more abstractly, sometimes more realistically.
The artist moves on the border of two styles, on a dreamy light landscape, which comes to life on the painting surface and takes the viewer on a philosophical journey to recall her own experiences with nature. The motif of a textured painting is inherently unpretentious – it is a view that the viewer can walk past every day. Yet Örd finds magic there that is not noticeable to the naked eye.
Her approach, how the artist depicts bright light or a view (often against the light) has few competitors in contemporary painting. Örd’s sense of space is also malleable and lively, simultaneously creating the feeling that we are here and away. A kind of exciting pattern play is created by the long shadows of the trees, which, when meeting each other, intensify and begin to live their own lives.
