In early 1937, Eduard Wiiralt had a solo exhibition at the Helsinki Art Hall of prints from his first 20 years of work. His “The Birth of Woodcut” was chosen as the first piece in the catalogue accompanying the exhibition, which was an ideal introduction to his profession and approach.
The exhibition itself became a major event in local cultural life as the opening was attended by the then Prime Minister of Finland, the Minister of Education as well as the Minister of Justice, not to mention numerous other important cultural and political figures. The design itself became a kind of textbook example of graphic art, which teachers still often use to explain the nature and birth of graphics.
The print has been reproduced in many books and is also part of the collections of several art museums.
