“Autumn is probably my season,” says Edgar Valter (1929-2006) in a 1975 radio interview. And it’s no wonder because that’s when the gifts of nature reach their true maturity and the enchanting beauty culminates in Valter’s favorite colors: bright gold, passionate red and soft brown, with green stubbornly clinging to the freshness of summer.

This is how an autumnal fairytale is born where the artist brings to life the forest spirits and ancient magic that Estonians have believed in for centuries. The power of the native lands and the powers of holy water, from which to draw inspiration and vitality – this was the painting that Valter kept in the most visible place in his Nõmme studio for decades.

The work belongs to the Edgar Valter estate collection.
