Marko Mäetamm (b. 1965), who actively entered the Estonian art scene in the early 1990s with provocative action paintings, took themes that had been rarely or not addressed at all and turned them on their heads. As a practitioner of neo-pop art, Mäetamm was primarily interested in the laconic figure, which seemed to have points of contact with the Fauve painters’ use of color.

The bathroom with a checkered floor where the artist places Sally could, with its timeless elegance, belong among today’s most popular interior design magazines, too. The division of the work into the so-called front and back rooms, or “facebook” and real life, is also just as relevant over 30 years later. At first glance, Mäetamm only seems to be playing around but it turns out that he saw the real truth a long time ago!
