The figural composition, with its pastel colors and delicate dreamy undertones, has a theme typical of the Tartu School of painting – a café scene, beloved by both the Pallasians and the post-Pallasians. The latter group also includes Lembit Saarts (1924-2016) within its ranks, who started at this school in 1942 and graduated in 1948.

A waitress arrives to bring an order to two ladies sitting at a table – but are they really sitting? Lembit Saarts is a superb visual illusionist in this picture because there are actually no chairs in the painting. The tabletop is also standing in the air, without legs. And what mysterious elixir is about to be offered to the visitors? All we can do is blink to check our visual acuity. Or are we dreaming all this?
