Scenes from the slums formed an important chapter in the work of art students and young artists at Pallas, especially in the 1920s and early 1930s, and this piece was completed by Erich Pehap (1912-1981) while he was studying there. A true-to-life cultural approach was in vogue at the time and Erich Pehap follows the spiritual direction of the era in his sanguine drawing “By the stove”.

The central object of the kitchen, with an unfixed background, is a woman, artistically sketched with freehand lines, traditionally wearing a towel on her head, moving a ladle in a pot. On the edge of the stove, however, you notice a kettle with a modern design, which shows that progress had also touched this particular corner of the home. The overall red color scheme matches the atmosphere of the kitchen well and creates a warm mood.
