Edgar Valter (1929-2006) has emphasized the importance of believing in fairy tales even in adulthood. The lessons they contain are often as important as textbook wisdom, as they help us to see the difference between good and evil or right and wrong, to let our creativity fly freely, and to believe in miracles.
In the painting “Prince on a white horse”, the beautiful woman awaits her prince on a moonlit night and gallops straight to the groom. However, the princess’ dream of this began in childhood – a story that Valter tells as a parallel tale in the lower part of the piece. It is here that we also notice an object that often appears in the artist’s work – a ladder, to symbolically emphasize the importance of striving for our dreams and the role each of us plays in this process.
